Core Mandatories
The following online modules have been designed to provide the Remote and Rural Health Practitioner with the necessary information in order to provide a flexible learning opportunity that will enhance current knowledge of clinical and discretionary competencies in professionally agreed organisational requirements.
1) Basic Life Support
The BLS module has been designed to provide the Remote and Rural Health Practitioner with the necessary information in order to provide a flexible learning opportunity that will enhance current knowledge and competency of this organisational annual requirement.

2) Building a Respectful Workplace
Unfortunately, workplace bullying can occur in all sorts of work environments, even in remote workplaces. Workplace bullying is “the repeated less favourable treatment of a person by another or others in the workplace, which may be considered unreasonable and inappropriate workplace practice. After completing the module you should be able to:
- Identify what is and what is not bullying
- Understand your rights and responsibilities regarding bullying in the workplace
- Know what to do and who to approach, if you are bullied
- Make an informed decision about how they want to build and/or maintain a Respectful Workplace

3) Introduction to Culturally Safe and Inclusive Practice
Working in remote, isolated and rural healthcare it is likely we maybe working (and living) in communities, and with people whose cultural background is different from our own.
This module encourages you to reflect on your practice, review your own bias and the lenses through which you view the world. And to further think about the cultures of your workplaces and communities.

4) Fire Awareness
This module has been designed to provide the health practitioner with the necessary information in order to provide a flexible learning opportunity that will enhance current knowledge of fire prevention, safety and preparedness.

5) Introduction to Infection Control
Preventing the transmission of infectious organisms and managing infection is essential to providing high quality health care and a safe working environment for all Health Workers. This module has been designed to provide the health practitioner with the necessary information in order to provide a flexible learning opportunity that will enhance current knowledge of infection control in the remote context.

6) Managing Difficult Behaviours
This module has been designed to provide the Health Practitioner with the necessary information in order to provide a flexible learning opportunity that will enhance current knowledge of managing difficult behaviour that is culturally sensitive and appropriate in the remote context. The module includes the following:
- What constitutes challenging or difficult behaviour
- Different kinds of challenging behaviour and the causes
- Help to recognise the potential for aggressive behaviour when dealing with people
- How to plan for effective responses in situations of challenging behaviour
- A range of strategies for dealing with different kinds of challenging behaviour
- Communication and self-management skills that can help in dealing with challenging behaviour
- Help to protect self and others when dealing with difficult behaviour

7) Manual Handling including Ergonomics
The first learning package has been designed to provide the Health Practitioner with the necessary information in order to provide a flexible learning opportunity that will enhance current knowledge of manual handling theory. It will take the student through the core elements of Manual Handling;
- Definitions and Management Overview
- Manual Handling Injuries and Basic Anatomy
- Principles of Manual Handling
- Manual Handling Legislation
The second learning package has been compiled to assist the remote and rural Health Practitioner in reinforcing knowledge of ergonomics and its application to office and clinic practice set up to prevent manual handling hazards.

8) Medication Calculation — Adults, Paediatrics & Mental Health
The ability to do accurate and quick drug calculations is an essential skill for Nurses and Midwives, yet many practitioners are unsure of their mathematical abilities. The assessments will allow you to “fine tune” your mathematical skills, learn the essentials and practice simple calculations.

9) Natural Disasters
This module has been designed to provide the Health Practitioner with the necessary information in order to provide a flexible learning opportunity that will enhance current knowledge of natural disasters and strategies to assist in a health response.

10) Professional Development
This module has been designed to provide information/tools to support the professional development process for both the employee and the employer. The performance development process involves:
- Establishing rapport between the employee and their reviewer by providing an opportunity for two-way feedback.
- Conducting a preliminary discussion about the Job Description/Statement of Duties and the expectations of the role.
- Integrating learning and work in all stages of development to establish measurable objectives.
- Measuring the progress toward objectives and celebrate success, building confidence through achievement.

11) Medicolegal Documentation
This learning package has been compiled to assist the Remote and Rural Health Practitioner in developing knowledge concerning documentation and its medico-legal requirements. Mr. John Ryan, Lawyer and member of the CRANAplus Board, has provided some advice and information to support the Health Practitioner, which has been included in this package.*

12) Working Safe in Remote Practice
This module provides an introduction to remote and isolated health safety and security issues. It also introduces participants to the use of self risk assessment tools: the Safety Audit; the Safety Flow Charts; and the Rapid Risk Assessment Tool.
