The fol­low­ing online mod­ules have been designed to pro­vide the Remote and Rur­al Health Prac­ti­tion­er with the nec­es­sary infor­ma­tion in order to pro­vide a flex­i­ble learn­ing oppor­tu­ni­ty that will enhance cur­rent knowl­edge of clin­i­cal and dis­cre­tionary com­pe­ten­cies in pro­fes­sion­al­ly agreed organ­i­sa­tion­al requirements.

1) Basic Life Sup­port

The BLS mod­ule has been designed to pro­vide the Remote and Rur­al Health Prac­ti­tion­er with the nec­es­sary infor­ma­tion in order to pro­vide a flex­i­ble learn­ing oppor­tu­ni­ty that will enhance cur­rent knowl­edge and com­pe­ten­cy of this organ­i­sa­tion­al annu­al requirement.

2) Build­ing a Respect­ful Workplace 

Unfor­tu­nate­ly, work­place bul­ly­ing can occur in all sorts of work envi­ron­ments, even in remote work­places. Work­place bul­ly­ing is the repeat­ed less favourable treat­ment of a per­son by anoth­er or oth­ers in the work­place, which may be con­sid­ered unrea­son­able and inap­pro­pri­ate work­place prac­tice. After com­plet­ing the mod­ule you should be able to:

  • Iden­ti­fy what is and what is not bullying 
  • Under­stand your rights and respon­si­bil­i­ties regard­ing bul­ly­ing in the workplace 
  • Know what to do and who to approach, if you are bullied 
  • Make an informed deci­sion about how they want to build and/​or main­tain a Respect­ful Workplace

3) Intro­duc­tion to Cul­tur­al­ly Safe and Inclu­sive Practice

Work­ing in remote, iso­lat­ed and rur­al health­care it is like­ly we maybe work­ing (and liv­ing) in com­mu­ni­ties, and with peo­ple whose cul­tur­al back­ground is dif­fer­ent from our own.
This mod­ule encour­ages you to reflect on your prac­tice, review your own bias and the lens­es through which you view the world. And to fur­ther think about the cul­tures of your work­places and communities.

4) Fire Awareness 

This mod­ule has been designed to pro­vide the health prac­ti­tion­er with the nec­es­sary infor­ma­tion in order to pro­vide a flex­i­ble learn­ing oppor­tu­ni­ty that will enhance cur­rent knowl­edge of fire pre­ven­tion, safe­ty and preparedness.

5) Intro­duc­tion to Infec­tion Control 

Pre­vent­ing the trans­mis­sion of infec­tious organ­isms and man­ag­ing infec­tion is essen­tial to pro­vid­ing high qual­i­ty health care and a safe work­ing envi­ron­ment for all Health Work­ers. This mod­ule has been designed to pro­vide the health prac­ti­tion­er with the nec­es­sary infor­ma­tion in order to pro­vide a flex­i­ble learn­ing oppor­tu­ni­ty that will enhance cur­rent knowl­edge of infec­tion con­trol in the remote context.

6) Man­ag­ing Dif­fi­cult Behaviours 

This mod­ule has been designed to pro­vide the Health Prac­ti­tion­er with the nec­es­sary infor­ma­tion in order to pro­vide a flex­i­ble learn­ing oppor­tu­ni­ty that will enhance cur­rent knowl­edge of man­ag­ing dif­fi­cult behav­iour that is cul­tur­al­ly sen­si­tive and appro­pri­ate in the remote con­text. The mod­ule includes the following: 

  • What con­sti­tutes chal­leng­ing or dif­fi­cult behaviour 
  • Dif­fer­ent kinds of chal­leng­ing behav­iour and the causes
  • Help to recog­nise the poten­tial for aggres­sive behav­iour when deal­ing with people 
  • How to plan for effec­tive respons­es in sit­u­a­tions of chal­leng­ing behaviour 
  • A range of strate­gies for deal­ing with dif­fer­ent kinds of chal­leng­ing behaviour 
  • Com­mu­ni­ca­tion and self-man­age­ment skills that can help in deal­ing with chal­leng­ing behaviour 
  • Help to pro­tect self and oth­ers when deal­ing with dif­fi­cult behaviour

7) Man­u­al Han­dling includ­ing Ergonomics 

The first learn­ing pack­age has been designed to pro­vide the Health Prac­ti­tion­er with the nec­es­sary infor­ma­tion in order to pro­vide a flex­i­ble learn­ing oppor­tu­ni­ty that will enhance cur­rent knowl­edge of man­u­al han­dling the­o­ry. It will take the stu­dent through the core ele­ments of Man­u­al Handling;

  • Def­i­n­i­tions and Man­age­ment Overview 
  • Man­u­al Han­dling Injuries and Basic Anatomy 
  • Prin­ci­ples of Man­u­al Handling
  • Man­u­al Han­dling Legislation

The sec­ond learn­ing pack­age has been com­piled to assist the remote and rur­al Health Prac­ti­tion­er in rein­forc­ing knowl­edge of ergonom­ics and its appli­ca­tion to office and clin­ic prac­tice set up to pre­vent man­u­al han­dling hazards.

8) Med­ica­tion Cal­cu­la­tion — Adults, Pae­di­atrics & Men­tal Health 

The abil­i­ty to do accu­rate and quick drug cal­cu­la­tions is an essen­tial skill for Nurs­es and Mid­wives, yet many prac­ti­tion­ers are unsure of their math­e­mat­i­cal abil­i­ties. The assess­ments will allow you to fine tune” your math­e­mat­i­cal skills, learn the essen­tials and prac­tice sim­ple calculations.

9) Nat­ur­al Disasters 

This mod­ule has been designed to pro­vide the Health Prac­ti­tion­er with the nec­es­sary infor­ma­tion in order to pro­vide a flex­i­ble learn­ing oppor­tu­ni­ty that will enhance cur­rent knowl­edge of nat­ur­al dis­as­ters and strate­gies to assist in a health response.

10) Pro­fes­sion­al Development 

This mod­ule has been designed to pro­vide information/​tools to sup­port the pro­fes­sion­al devel­op­ment process for both the employ­ee and the employ­er. The per­for­mance devel­op­ment process involves: 

  • Estab­lish­ing rap­port between the employ­ee and their review­er by pro­vid­ing an oppor­tu­ni­ty for two-way feedback.
  • Con­duct­ing a pre­lim­i­nary dis­cus­sion about the Job Description/​Statement of Duties and the expec­ta­tions of the role. 
  • Inte­grat­ing learn­ing and work in all stages of devel­op­ment to estab­lish mea­sur­able objectives. 
  • Mea­sur­ing the progress toward objec­tives and cel­e­brate suc­cess, build­ing con­fi­dence through achievement.

11) Medicole­gal Documentation 

This learn­ing pack­age has been com­piled to assist the Remote and Rur­al Health Prac­ti­tion­er in devel­op­ing knowl­edge con­cern­ing doc­u­men­ta­tion and its medico-legal require­ments. Mr. John Ryan, Lawyer and mem­ber of the CRANAplus Board, has pro­vid­ed some advice and infor­ma­tion to sup­port the Health Prac­ti­tion­er, which has been includ­ed in this package.*

12) Work­ing Safe in Remote Practice 

This mod­ule pro­vides an intro­duc­tion to remote and iso­lat­ed health safe­ty and secu­ri­ty issues. It also intro­duces par­tic­i­pants to the use of self risk assess­ment tools: the Safe­ty Audit; the Safe­ty Flow Charts; and the Rapid Risk Assess­ment Tool.
