The Indian Ocean Territories Administration (IOTA) is currently seeking motivated, professional and suitably qualified persons to join our team as the Director of Oral Health within the Indian Ocean Territories Health Service (IOTHS) based on Christmas Island.

As a sole dental practitioner (dentist), the Director of Oral Health is responsible for:

  • providing paediatric and adult dental services to the communities of Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands;
  • working with the Oral Health Team to deliver best practice high quality clinical care and preventive oral health services using a culturally appropriate approach; and
  • providing leadership, vision and developing strategies to enable the Oral Health Team to continue to successfully operate within the IOTHS strategic and operational plans and maintain accreditation.

Our ideal applicant will have demonstrated experience and a commitment to public health principles as well as experience in achieving accreditation for an oral health service. Further, candidates must be an effective clinical leader and able to work collaboratively. Strong negotiating, influencing, communication and interpersonal skills are required to treat patients across a range of cultural groups and demonstrated professional and technical proficiency to operate as a sole practitioner is also essential.

To be considered, applicants must hold current registration as a Dental Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and have a minimum of seven (7) years general paediatric and dental experience including previous experience in a rural or remote environment. The successful candidate must hold a current ‘C’ class Driving Licence transferable to the Indian Ocean Territories, a valid Western Australia Working with Children Check and a Senior First Aid Certificate. The successful candidate must also provide evidence of Hepatitis B vaccination or immunity, be willing to travel and work at the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and will be subject to a health assessment. Language skills in the community languages of either Chinese or Malay are desirable as is previous experience using Titanium Patient and Practice Management Software.
