Spinifex Peo­ple

Tjun­tjun­t­jara is a small, remote Abo­rig­i­nal com­mu­ni­ty locat­ed on the Spinifex Lands in the West­ern Desert region of West­ern Aus­tralia. The Tjun­tjun­t­jara Clin­ic ser­vices a pop­u­la­tion of around 150 peo­ple. The community’s remote­ness is one of its great­est strengths: it is a rel­a­tive­ly healthy com­mu­ni­ty with a strong cul­tur­al base and good devel­op­ment prospects. The health ser­vice trades as Spinifex Health Ser­vice (SHS).

Spinifex Health Ser­vice is an Abo­rig­i­nal Con­trolled Com­mu­ni­ty Health Organ­i­sa­tion gov­erned by the Paupiyala Tjarut­ja Abo­rig­i­nal Cor­po­ra­tion (PTAC) Board and the Health Sub-com­mit­tee. Spinifex Health Ser­vice is also respon­si­ble for the deliv­ery of aged care & dis­abil­i­ty ser­vices, oper­at­ing in con­junc­tion with its pri­ma­ry care and pre­ven­ta­tive health programs. 

Pri­ma­ry Purpose

This posi­tion has respon­si­bil­i­ty for the pro­vi­sion of health care in the areas of Pri­ma­ry Health, Sex­u­al Health, Chron­ic Dis­ease, Aged Care and Men­tal Health in the com­mu­ni­ty, as well as pro­vid­ing emer­gency care and RAN leave relief as required. Clin­ic staff are sup­port­ed by Abo­rig­i­nal Health Prac­ti­tion­ers and trainee Abo­rig­i­nal Health Work­ers. The Spinifex Health Ser­vice Med­ical Direc­tor pro­vides GP ser­vices both with­in com­mu­ni­ty and off-site. When the GP is not in res­i­dence the RAN’S are the senior clin­i­cians in com­mu­ni­ty and work as a col­lab­o­ra­tive team togeth­er with Abo­rig­i­nal Health Practitioners.

Respon­si­bil­i­ties include:

  • Pro­vi­sion of health checks, devel­op­men­tal and fol­low up of GP man­age­ment plans and TCA
  • Pro­vid­ing edu­ca­tion to the com­mu­ni­ty about health pro­mo­tion and dis­ease pre­ven­tion, and to clients to assist them in under­stand­ing and man­ag­ing their health con­di­tions and treat­ment requirements
  • Work­ing close­ly with Aged Care Ser­vices that are deliv­ered in the community
  • Work­ing close­ly with allied health and oth­er clin­i­cians to pro­vide con­tem­po­rary best prac­tice care
  • Per­form­ing clin­i­cal duties in all areas of the health ser­vice as direct­ed by the Med­ical Direc­tor or Health Ser­vices Man­ag­er, which you are appro­pri­ate­ly qual­i­fied and com­pe­tent to per­form which may include port­fo­lio respon­si­bil­i­ties in the areas of gen­er­al clin­ic man­age­ment, emer­gency care and sta­bil­i­sa­tion includ­ing man­ag­ing med­ical evac­u­a­tions, child and fam­i­ly health, aged care, ante­na­tal, sex­u­al health, men­tal health, chron­ic dis­ease, health screen­ing and com­mu­ni­ty programs
  • Pro­vid­ing pal­lia­tive care where required
  • Work an on-call roster

Cri­te­ria

Essen­tial

  • Cur­rent reg­is­tra­tion with the Nurs­ing and Mid­wifery Board of Australia.
  • A min­i­mum of three years full-time broad-based nurs­ing expe­ri­ence, includ­ing A&E experience
  • Demon­strat­ed remote Abo­rig­i­nal nurs­ing experience
  • Com­ple­tion of REC, BLS/ALS, phar­ma­cother­a­py courses
  • Demon­strat­ed under­stand­ing of issues affect­ing Abo­rig­i­nal health, the prin­ci­ples of Pri­ma­ry Health Care and rel­e­vant leg­is­la­tion gov­ern­ing work practice
  • Demon­strat­ed com­mit­ment to qual­i­ty improve­ment, evi­dence-based prac­tice, research, edu­ca­tion and pro­fes­sion­al development
  • Famil­iar­i­ty with the CARPA Man­u­al and the Women’s Busi­ness Manual
  • A com­pre­hen­sive under­stand­ing of best prac­tice for the man­age­ment and treat­ment of chron­ic dis­eases in Abo­rig­i­nal Communities
  • Recog­nised cur­rent Immu­ni­sa­tion course certificate/​training
  • Some expe­ri­ence in social and emo­tion­al well­be­ing, men­tal health or alco­hol and drug counselling
  • Nation­al police check
  • West Aus­tralian Work­ing with Chil­dren Check
  • Man­u­al cur­rent dri­vers’ licence
  • Gov­ern­ment manda­to­ry COVID-19 Vac­ci­na­tion applies

Cross Cul­tur­al:

  • A gen­uine inter­est in work­ing coop­er­a­tive­ly with tra­di­tion­al­ly ori­ent­ed Abo­rig­i­nal people
  • Strong cross-cul­tur­al com­mu­ni­ca­tion skills
  • Expe­ri­ence work­ing in a remote area Abo­rig­i­nal community
