CRANAplus Congratulates Minister on RDA Action

5 Jul 2010

CRANAplus is thrilled that the Racial Discrimination Act in the Northern Territory will be reinstated by January 2011. CRANAplus also welcomes the news that the income management strategy will now be applied equally to all Territorians in need, regardless of their race.

Carole Taylor, CEO of CRANAplus, explained that there is little doubt that income management has had positive benefits for some individuals, whereas for others it has made life very difficult.

CRANAplus did not support the suspension of the Racial Discrimination Act in the NT and was appalled that the Aboriginal population of the Northern Territory was not given the dignity of being treated equal to their non-Indigenous counterparts. CRANAplus members, many of whom work within Indigenous communities or are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander themselves saw first hand the incorrect negative stereotypes that blossom in an environment where social justices are withdrawn.

Jo Appoo, member of the CRANAplus board of directors, said in regards to the announcement, This is a good day and long overdue, suspending the RDA gave approval for behavior that should never be tolerated in modern Australia. I just hope that this part of our history will not reflect on those of us who feel proud to live and work alongside those of the first Nation of Australia.”

Well done Minister for re-instating this most basic of human rights, let’s all move forward together.
