Tasmanian Health Service is seeking a Nurse Practitioner for the Emergency Department of the Launceston Hospital.

The Role:

  • Pro­vide health care reflec­tive of advanced and extend­ed nurs­ing skills, expe­ri­ence and knowl­edge in assess­ment, diag­no­sis, plan­ning, imple­men­ta­tion, and eval­u­a­tion of care.
  • Utilise clin­i­cal guide­lines that are based on best prac­tice prin­ci­ples, with­in a col­lab­o­ra­tive and inter­dis­ci­pli­nary frame­work and in accor­dance with nation­al stan­dards, agency direc­tions, polices, legal require­ments and pro­fes­sion­al competencies.
  • Under­take expert deci­sion mak­ing with­in the spe­cial­i­ty in rela­tion to clients, their fam­i­lies, and the ser­vice area, across sta­ble or unpre­dictable and/​or com­plex care situations.
  • Apply evi­dence-based knowl­edge to the care and edu­ca­tion of clients, their fam­i­lies, and the ser­vice area.
  • Estab­lish ther­a­peu­tic links with clients their fam­i­lies and the com­mu­ni­ty that recog­nise and respect cul­tur­al iden­ti­ty and lifestyle choices.
  • Par­tic­i­pate in ongo­ing learn­ing and devel­op­ment through a pro­fes­sion­al port­fo­lio, par­tic­i­pa­tion in rel­e­vant ongo­ing edu­ca­tion and par­tic­i­pa­tion in review processes.
  • Estab­lish effec­tive, col­lab­o­ra­tive and pro­fes­sion­al rela­tion­ships with clients, med­ical prac­ti­tion­ers, and oth­er mem­bers of the inter­dis­ci­pli­nary health team and stake­hold­ers to opti­mise out­comes for clients, their fam­i­lies and in the ser­vice area.
  • Con­tribute to the devel­op­ment of pro­fes­sion­al prac­tice by par­tic­i­pat­ing in rel­e­vant pro­fes­sion­al organ­i­sa­tions at local, state and nation­al level.
  • Con­tribute to pol­i­cy devel­op­ment at all lev­els to enhance the Nurse Prac­ti­tion­er role with­in the ser­vice area.
  • Con­tribute to research that leads to improve­ments in health and health­care deliv­ery, and fos­ters a cul­ture of inquiry, inno­va­tion, qual­i­ty and audit, and sub­mits reports/​recommendations that lead to improve­ment in health and health­care deliv­ery and min­imise clin­i­cal risk.
  • The incum­bent can expect to be allo­cat­ed duties, not specif­i­cal­ly men­tioned in this doc­u­ment, that are with­in the capac­i­ty, qual­i­fi­ca­tions and expe­ri­ence nor­mal­ly expect­ed from per­sons occu­py­ing posi­tions at this clas­si­fi­ca­tion level.

The Launce­s­ton Gen­er­al Hospital:

The Launce­s­ton Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal (LGH) is the major refer­ral hos­pi­tal in North­ern Tasmania. 

Emer­gency Depart­ment (ED) is a fast-paced and ener­getic envi­ron­ment pro­vid­ing an excep­tion­al stan­dard of care to patients through a 42-cubi­cle space ED con­sist­ing of Fast Track, Emer­gency Med­ical Unit, Acute and Sub­a­cute Areas. 

The nurs­ing team con­sists of Nurse Prac­ti­tion­ers, Clin­i­cal Nurse Con­sul­tants, Clin­i­cal Nurse Edu­ca­tors and a broad range of Reg­is­tered Nurs­es and Enrolled Nurses.

LGH ED have imple­ment­ed Clin­i­cal Coach­es, to sup­port the devel­op­ment of staff, and have ongo­ing pro­gres­sion path­ways into Resus­ci­ta­tion areas, Triage and Clin­i­cal Ini­tia­tive Nurse (CIN) roles.

The broad­er ED team includes 14 FACEMS, 18 Reg­is­trars and 20 Junior Med­ical Offi­cers, sup­port­ed by an Allied Health Team includ­ing Phar­ma­cists, a Hos­pi­tal Aged care Liai­son Team and ded­i­cat­ed Sup­port Offi­cers and ancil­lary staff.

The ED offers its Nurs­ing staff a com­pre­hen­sive edu­ca­tion pro­gramme facil­i­tat­ed by Clin­i­cal Nurse Edu­ca­tors. Fur­ther to this we offer a 6 month Intro­duc­to­ry to Emer­gency Pro­gram to Nurs­ing staff. This pro­gram pro­vides sup­port­ed advanced train­ing and edu­ca­tion to devel­op staff. Upon suc­cess­ful com­ple­tion and in con­junc­tion with the Uni­ver­si­ty of Tas­ma­nia, Nurs­es will be eli­gi­ble for recog­ni­tion of pri­or learn­ing for post grad­u­ate stud­ies in Emer­gency Nursing. 

Details of Appointment

Per­ma­nent full time shift work (ful­ly rota­tion­al), posi­tion work­ing 76 hours per fort­night, com­menc­ing from 1 Jan­u­ary 2023.

Appli­cants should note that, for a peri­od of six months from the date of pub­li­ca­tion, this selec­tion process may be used to fill sub­se­quent or sim­i­lar full time and part time vacancies.

Salary: $128,929 per annum + 10.5% super­an­nu­a­tion + access to salary packaging

  1. Reg­is­tered with the Nurs­ing and Mid­wifery Board of Aus­tralia as a Reg­is­tered Nurse and endorsed to prac­tice as a Nurse Practitioner
