Child Health Nurse Outreach
Posted: 19 May 2023
Location: Top End NT
TEHS now has an opportunity for a Child Health Nurse to join their friendly, outreach multidisciplinary team based in Darwin on a full-time basis.
As a member of the multidisciplinary outreach team, this position works collaboratively to provide child and family clinical leadership and expert advice to remote based staff and community organisations to improve the health of children and families in an individual, sensitive and culturally appropriated manner: through monitoring, education, training and health promotion. Ability and willingness to travel to remote areas on a regular basis by road, light plane or ferry and stay for up to a week is required.
Applicants must be eligible to obtain an NT drivers licence.
Darwin is a vibrant and multicultural city that is home to more than 100 nationalities, which is evident in its culture and food. Here in The Territory, we enjoy an enviable laidback lifestyle with amazing weather, excellent career opportunities, short commutes, spectacular displays of outback starry skies, and colourful tropical sunsets with friendly and inclusive people. The Northern Territory has two distinctive climate zones. The northern end, including Darwin, has a tropical climate with high humidity and two seasons, the wet (October to April) and dry season (May to September). During the dry season nearly every day is warm and sunny.
Some of your key responsibilities will include:
- Provide regular scheduled child and development health checks according to the universal and enhanced aboriginal child health schedule (0 to 5 year old)
- Facilitate recall and reminders of children for screening, follow-up and/or scheduled health checks;
- Update baseline information about existing child health services in the communities;
- Assist with the planning, development and distribution of health promotion training and resources for clients, TEHS staff and the local and regional community in child health;
- Where necessary, develop and support key staff in the use and application of information management systems to organise child health, including the monitoring and maintenance of data quality.
The ideal candidate will be a Registered Nurse, with post graduate qualifications in Child Health and who is registered or is eligible for registration with AHPRA. You’ll also require demonstrated experience in the planning, provision, management and evaluation of maternal and child health services within a primary health care setting, as well as the proven ability to develop, implement, and evaluate community-based health promotion programs and resources.
Ideally, you would have experience in developing implementing and evaluating community based health promotion programs and health promotion resources for use in cross cultural settings. A high level of integrity and a dedication to maintaining patient confidentiality will ensure you flourish in this position.
Due to the nature of this role a current driver’s licence with the capacity to drive a 4WD is required. Additionally, you will need to be able to travel by light aircraft.
Please note: It is a requirement that successful candidates hold a current NT Working with Children Check, and be willing to undergo a National Police Check prior to employment with TEHS.
