TEHS now has an opportunity for a Child Health Nurse to join their friendly, outreach multidisciplinary team based in Darwin on a full-time basis.

As a mem­ber of the mul­ti­dis­ci­pli­nary out­reach team, this posi­tion works col­lab­o­ra­tive­ly to pro­vide child and fam­i­ly clin­i­cal lead­er­ship and expert advice to remote based staff and com­mu­ni­ty organ­i­sa­tions to improve the health of chil­dren and fam­i­lies in an indi­vid­ual, sen­si­tive and cul­tur­al­ly appro­pri­at­ed man­ner: through mon­i­tor­ing, edu­ca­tion, train­ing and health pro­mo­tion. Abil­i­ty and will­ing­ness to trav­el to remote areas on a reg­u­lar basis by road, light plane or fer­ry and stay for up to a week is required.

Appli­cants must be eli­gi­ble to obtain an NT dri­vers licence.

The north­ern end, includ­ing Dar­win, has a trop­i­cal cli­mate with high humid­i­ty and two sea­sons, the wet (Octo­ber to April) and dry sea­son (May to Sep­tem­ber). Dur­ing the dry sea­son near­ly every day is warm and sunny.

Some of your key respon­si­bil­i­ties will include:

  • Pro­vide reg­u­lar sched­uled child and devel­op­ment health checks accord­ing to the uni­ver­sal and enhanced abo­rig­i­nal child health sched­ule (0 to 5 year old)
  • Facil­i­tate recall and reminders of chil­dren for screen­ing, fol­low-up and/​or sched­uled health checks;
  • Update base­line infor­ma­tion about exist­ing child health ser­vices in the communities;
  • Assist with the plan­ning, devel­op­ment and dis­tri­b­u­tion of health pro­mo­tion train­ing and resources for clients, TEHS staff and the local and region­al com­mu­ni­ty in child health;
  • Where nec­es­sary, devel­op and sup­port key staff in the use and appli­ca­tion of infor­ma­tion man­age­ment sys­tems to organ­ise child health, includ­ing the mon­i­tor­ing and main­te­nance of data quality.

The ide­al can­di­date will be a Reg­is­tered Nurse, with post grad­u­ate qual­i­fi­ca­tions in Child Health and who is reg­is­tered or is eli­gi­ble for reg­is­tra­tion with AHPRA. You’ll also require demon­strat­ed expe­ri­ence in the plan­ning, pro­vi­sion, man­age­ment and eval­u­a­tion of mater­nal and child health ser­vices with­in a pri­ma­ry health care set­ting, as well as the proven abil­i­ty to devel­op, imple­ment, and eval­u­ate com­mu­ni­ty-based health pro­mo­tion pro­grams and resources.

Ide­al­ly, you would have expe­ri­ence in devel­op­ing imple­ment­ing and eval­u­at­ing com­mu­ni­ty based health pro­mo­tion pro­grams and health pro­mo­tion resources for use in cross cul­tur­al set­tings. A high lev­el of integri­ty and a ded­i­ca­tion to main­tain­ing patient con­fi­den­tial­i­ty will ensure you flour­ish in this position.

Due to the nature of this role a cur­rent driver’s licence with the capac­i­ty to dri­ve a 4WD is required. Addi­tion­al­ly, you will need to be able to trav­el by light aircraft.
