The Mental Health Remote Area Nurse is responsible for providing integrated, culturally responsive, and safe mental health services to meet the Mental Health and Social and Emotional Well-Being (MHSEWB) needs of the Galiwin’ku Community and surrounding Homelands

The Men­tal Health Remote Area Nurse is respon­si­ble for pro­vid­ing inte­grat­ed, cul­tur­al­ly respon­sive, and safe men­tal health ser­vices to meet the Men­tal Health and Social and Emo­tion­al Well-Being (MHSEWB) needs of the Galiwin’ku Com­mu­ni­ty and sur­round­ing Home­lands. The posi­tion leads and mon­i­tors the deliv­ery of high-qual­i­ty, evi­dence-based care for indi­vid­u­als with diag­nosed men­tal ill­ness­es and co-mor­bid chron­ic con­di­tions. With a focus on Pri­ma­ry Health Care (PHC) and out­reach, the role imple­ments Stepped-Care ser­vices and is embed­ded in the PHC ser­vice mod­el to pro­mote holis­tic health care solu­tions for clients.

Essen­tial Requirements

The ide­al can­di­date will have a strong under­stand­ing of and com­mit­ment to Abo­rig­i­nal Com­mu­ni­ty Con­trol and self-deter­mi­na­tion, as well as knowl­edge of the unique chal­lenges faced by Yol­ngu peo­ple in remote set­tings. The can­di­date must have expe­ri­ence in deliv­er­ing coor­di­nat­ed men­tal health ser­vices and cul­tur­al­ly adapt­ing evi­dence-based inter­ven­tions for Abo­rig­i­nal com­mu­ni­ties. A min­i­mum of two years’ expe­ri­ence in Indige­nous men­tal health and alco­hol and oth­er drug ser­vices, along with a cur­rent Ochre Card, dri­ver’s license, and AHPRA reg­is­tra­tion as a Reg­is­tered Nurse or Abo­rig­i­nal Health Prac­ti­tion­er, is required. A post-grad­u­ate qual­i­fi­ca­tion in Men­tal Health and a Cer­tifi­cate IV or equiv­a­lent in AOD is also essential.
