About RFDS (Queens­land Sec­tion)

The Roy­al Fly­ing Doc­tor Ser­vice (RFDS) (Queens­land Sec­tion) is com­mit­ted to pro­vid­ing excel­lence in and access to Pri­ma­ry Health Care (PHC) and Aeromed­ical ser­vices across Queens­land.

PHC is one of our most vital ser­vices, account­ing for up to two-thirds of our dai­ly oper­a­tions, as pre­ven­tion is essen­tial to improved health out­comes for those liv­ing in the fur­thest cor­ner.

Our Role

We are look­ing for a Nurse Man­ag­er in Pri­ma­ry Health Care who is pas­sion­ate about lead­ing and pro­vid­ing PHC ser­vices to peo­ple in region­al, rur­al, and remote areas of Queens­land. As a Nurse Man­ag­er, you will have the oppor­tu­ni­ty to inspire and empow­er a ded­i­cat­ed team to deliv­er best prac­tices in pro­mot­ing good health, pro­vid­ing proac­tive care, and main­tain­ing over­all well-being.

The Nurse Man­ag­er PHC is cru­cial in deliv­er­ing qual­i­ty health­care ser­vices and improv­ing health out­comes. You will be respon­si­ble for lead­ing with a focus on edu­ca­tion, rep­re­sen­ta­tion, and oper­a­tional effi­cien­cy. Your ded­i­ca­tion will ensure that pri­ma­ry health­care nurs­ing ser­vices meet the high­est stan­dards of care and per­for­mance. In addi­tion, your role will include; 

  • Coach­ing, lead­ing and sup­port­ing PHC nurs­es in your team
  • Lead­ing work­force plan­ning and recruit­ment of PHC nurses
  • Work­ing close­ly with the State Man­ag­er and col­lab­o­ra­tive­ly with inter­dis­ci­pli­nary base leads
  • Ensur­ing that clin­i­cal equip­ment, main­te­nance, and con­sum­ables are ade­quate to sup­port PHC activ­i­ties at a base level
  • Man­age local PHC nurs­ing resources and ros­ters with­in the approved budget
  • Par­tic­i­pate in oper­a­tional shifts for 50% of your roster
  • With a focus on growth, you will col­lab­o­rate to expand and enhance PHC nurs­ing ser­vices, con­tribut­ing to the strate­gic direc­tion and strat­e­gy devel­op­ment with­in the PHC stream 

This per­ma­nent, full-time posi­tion will be based at the RFDS Cairns Base. You will be respon­si­ble for lead­ing essen­tial pri­ma­ry health­care ser­vices to com­mu­ni­ties in the Far North and North­west regions. This includes deliv­er­ing clin­i­cal ser­vices as part of our group prac­tice on a rota­tion­al basis from our Mt Isa base.

As part of your sup­port for rur­al and remote com­mu­ni­ties, your broad scope of prac­tice may include: 

  • Abo­rig­i­nal and Tor­res Strait Islander health services
  • Child and fam­i­ly health services
  • Women’s health services
  • Chron­ic dis­ease care and support
  • Health Pro­mo­tion and Health Edu­ca­tion Activities
  • Ear­ly detec­tion and brief inter­ven­tion programs 

Essen­tial Skills

As a respect­ed leader with­in the PHC Team, your well-estab­lished man­age­ment skills, excep­tion­al lead­er­ship, and deci­sion-mak­ing abil­i­ties will make a valu­able con­tri­bu­tion. Your demon­strat­ed capa­bil­i­ty to ini­ti­ate and exe­cute change and ded­i­ca­tion to con­tin­u­ous qual­i­ty improve­ment will see the team con­tin­ue to achieve excep­tion­al patient-cen­tred care. Your strong prob­lem-solv­ing skills and inno­v­a­tive think­ing will play a key role in sup­port­ing your team and con­tribut­ing to the over­all PHC vision.

In addi­tion, you will be an expe­ri­enced Reg­is­tered Nurse and Mid­wife who can work autonomous­ly and in a mul­ti­dis­ci­pli­nary team. In addi­tion to your resilience and com­pas­sion, you will have: 

  • AHPRA reg­is­tra­tion as a Reg­is­tered Nurse
  • AHPRA reg­is­tra­tion as a Reg­is­tered Midwife
  • Exten­sive expe­ri­ence in Rur­al and Remote Nurs­ing and the pro­vi­sion of health ser­vices to Abo­rig­i­nal and Tor­res Strait Islander communities
  • Immu­ni­sa­tion endorse­ment (desir­able)
  • Rur­al and Iso­lat­ed Prac­tice (Sched­uled Med­i­cines) endorse­ment (RIPRN) (desir­able)
  • A Respect­ful under­stand­ing of cul­tur­al diver­si­ty includ­ing tra­di­tion­al Abo­rig­i­nal and Tor­res Strait Islander views of health
  • Capac­i­ty to stay overnight in com­mu­ni­ties (23 nights)


Essen­tial Skills (Can be obtained after start­ing employment) 

  • Cur­rent Advanced Life Sup­port (ALS)
  • Pae­di­atric Advanced Life Sup­port (PALS)
  • Neona­tal advanced resus­ci­ta­tion certification
