About the Organisation

With an administrative hub based in Newman, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, The Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) provides holistic primary health care to the individuals and families within the remote communities of Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu and Kunawarritji.

PAMS has over 700 registered clients, with most being Martu. Services offered include health education and promotion programs and initiatives, as well as the monitoring and management of ongoing health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, ante-natal & post-natal care and child health.

About the Opportunity

PAMS is seeking two Remote Area Registered Nurses to join their team on a 6 weeks on, 2 weeks off, fly in, fly out roster.

PAMS operates four sites, three of which have a team of one nurse and a range of ancillary workers. Although the successful candidates will have a substantive location they must be prepared from time to time to work across any one of these sites should they be required.

Vacancy 1 is located at Jigalong Community, a two hour drive from Newman with a population of approximately five hundred. Jigalong clinic has a team of three Remote Area Nurses, an Administrative Officer, a Driver and two Remote Medical Practitioners who alternate every two weeks. This community also receives a range of visits from medical specialists and allied health services.

Vacancy 2 is located at Parnngurr Community. Parnngurr community is approximately 370km from Newman on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert. This clinic is staffed by one Remote Area Nurse and a part time Cleaner/Driver/Administrative Officer. A Remote Medical Practitioner visits the community via charter every two weeks as well as a range of other visiting medical specialists and allied health services. Both the Community Coordinator and the Cleaner/Driver/Administration Officer support the Remote Area Nurse after hours to ensure they are never working alone.

In this role you will be required to:

  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide holistic primary health care services including screening, prevention, treatment and management of chronic disease
  • Utilise the CARPA Standard Treatment Manuals to provide evidence based, best practice interventions for all presentations.
  • Respond to a diverse range of emergency presentations such as trauma, acute illness, mental health presentations and exacerbation of chronic diseases.
  • Care for, prepare and transport acutely unwell clients to the site of aeromedical evacuation
  • Undertake preventative health checks across the lifespan including Child Health Checks, Antenatal and Post Natal Checks, Adult Health Checks and Old Peoples checks as well as sexual health screening.
  • Provide immunisations in line with the National Vaccination Schedule
  • Provide high quality chronic disease management including provision of health promotion and education
  • Provide appropriate intervention, treatment and referral for clients with mental health and substance abuse issues.

To be successful, you will hold a current registration with AHPRA as a registered nurse with at least three post graduate experience in nursing.

Your recent experience working as a Remote Area Nurse will ensure you have a well-developed understanding of Primary Health Care and the health issues that impact on the health and well-being of Aboriginal people.

About the Region

Located approximately 1,186 kilometres north of Perth, the Pilbara has some of the world’s most ancient natural landscapes, dating back two billion years and stretching over 500,000 square kilometres.

The Pilbara is known as the engine room of Australia, home to a massive mining industry in oil, salt, natural gas and iron ore.

Aboriginal heritage extends back to around 26,000 years, the local Martu people started to move back into their traditional land and establish communities during the 1980s. The Federal Government officially recognised the traditional ownership of the Martu people in September 2002, and granted land rights to 136,000 square kilometres of land to the east of Newman, which includes the communities of Jigalong, Punmu, Kunawarritji and Parnngur.
