In our free remote health webi­nar series, health pro­fes­sion­als such as remote area nurs­es and nurse prac­ti­tion­ers present on var­ied iso­lat­ed, remote health subjects.

Our free webi­na­rs are designed to sup­port con­tin­u­ous pro­fes­sion­al devel­op­ment for remote area nurs­es, mid­wives and oth­er health work­ers, and to increase clin­i­cal knowl­edge and aware­ness of impor­tant pro­grams and initiatives.

Primary Health Care in the Remote Setting

Dr Kylie McCullough discusses primary health care in the remote setting including what is primary health care about, how it can be delivered in a remote setting, and the role of a Remote Area Nurse in its delivery. Dr McCullough is currently a lecturer at Edith Cowan University with extensive experience not only in research on the remote sector but has had opportunities herself to work in remote settings which has driven her passion to where she is now.

Childhood anaemia in the remote setting

This webinar covers topics including: defining childhood anaemia, signs to look out for, prevention, treatment and management, and the importance of understanding that anaemia can start from pregnancy.

The Social Determinants of Health – A RAN’s role?

Dr Scott Davis discusses social determinants of health and how they relate to health outcomes, encouraging listeners to ask: how does a RAN deliver primary health care and improve better health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members? Rheumatic heart disease is preventable and manageable. RHDAustralia staff will discuss the critical elements for preventing acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, with a focus on care that is clinically sound and culturally safe.

Human diseases caused by insects

In this webinar, Nina Kurucz, Director of Medical Entomology discusses different diseases in humans caused by mosquitos including Japanese encephalitis, Dengue fever and Malaria; personal protection measures that should be used; and disease symptoms. Nina is also joined by a CDC physician who discusses mosquito diseases from a clinical perspective and what rural and remote health professionals can and should do with clients who may have these diseases.

The three-part Child Health in Remote Practice webinar series explores the importance and practicalities of child health assessments for children and families living in remote and/or Indigenous communities. Session 2 focuses on the key role of nutrition in optimising growth and development for young children and provides an overview of infant and child feeding recommendations along with practical strategies for promoting breastfeeding, timely commencement of solid foods and progression to a healthy family diet.

The three-part Child Health in Remote Practice webinar series explores the importance and practicalities of child health assessments for children and families living in remote and/or Indigenous communities.

Session 1 discusses the impacts of child development and nutrition on life outcomes and provides an overview of brain development and the factors impacting on brain development including growth, nutrition, infections, anaemia and adverse childhood events.

Machado-Joseph Disease in Australia

This webinar covers Machado-Joseph Disease manifestations in Australia, the demographic of people it impacts and the layers of complexities that remoteness and culture bring to supporting these families. Presenter Liz Willis, Physiotherapist for the MJD Foundation, also discusses current programs and recommendations for management from medical, allied health and community perspectives, while highlighting current and recent research in the field.

Leanne will be talking about her journey from starting off in a remote area and gained experience to become a remote mobile RN and educator, to eventually working for her own business as a remote Clinical Educator.
