Based in our Malmald­har­ra Health Cen­tre, you will be work­ing close­ly with our Abo­rig­i­nal work​force​.To be suc­cess­ful in this posi­tion you will pro­vide high qual­i­ty, cul­tur­al­ly appro­pri­ate and effec­tive Mid­wifery and Women’s Health nurs­ing prac­tice as well as to improve the health and well­be­ing of Abo­rig­i­nal & Tor­res Strait Islander people.

Core aspects of your role will include:

  • To work in the Women’s Pro­gram in part­ner­ship with the Abo­rig­i­nal Health work­force to pro­vide high qual­i­ty ante­na­tal and post­na­tal care to clients of Milingim­bi community.
  • To pro­vide Women’s Health Checks to clients includ­ing pap smears and STI screening.
  • To assist women with fam­i­ly plan­ning edu­ca­tion and con­tra­cep­tive options.
  • To pre­pare clients for com­ple­tion of rel­e­vant MBS recalls on Communicare.
  • To work in part­ner­ship with oth­er health pro­fes­sion­als to ensure a mul­ti-dis­ci­pli­nary approach to health care and to sup­port best prac­tice, knowl­edge, and skills of remote area practitioners.
  • Devel­op effec­tive inter­a­gency part­ner­ships for exam­ple with Gove and Dar­win Hos­pi­tals to ensure con­ti­nu­ity of care for clients.
  • Gen­er­ate refer­ral lists from Com­mu­ni­care across spe­cial­ist areas and main­tain a data­base for each spe­cial­ist area to track assess­ments, treat­ments and fol­low-on referrals.
  • To pro­vide cul­tur­al­ly inclu­sive qual­i­ty health care to indi­vid­u­als, fam­i­lies and the com­mu­ni­ty with­in own lev­el of com­pe­ten­cy and across agreed pro­ce­dures and pro­to­cols, and in accor­dance with CARPA Man­u­al, in order to meet expect­ed health outcomes.
  • Pro­vide high qual­i­ty emer­gency care that at times is inde­pen­dent but with tele­phone support.
  • Con­tribute to the pro­vi­sion of a 24-hour ser­vice to Malmald­har­ra Health Cen­tre clients by under­tak­ing after hours on call services.
  • To fol­low up on med­ica­tions, treat­ments, or oth­er pro­ce­dures under the direc­tion of the treat­ing doctor.
  • To work in col­lab­o­ra­tion with rel­e­vant stake­hold­ers to devel­op edu­ca­tion pro­grams and mate­r­i­al for ante­na­tal birth and post­na­tal education.

Essen­tial min­i­mum requirements

  • An under­stand­ing of and com­mit­ment to Abo­rig­i­nal Com­mu­ni­ty Con­trol and self-determination.
  • An under­stand­ing of the issues faced by Yol­ngu peo­ple liv­ing in remote settings.
  • Cur­rent Reg­is­tra­tion and annu­al prac­tic­ing cer­tifi­cate as a Reg­is­tered Nurse with AHPRA.
  • Min­i­mum of 5 years broad nurs­ing / mid­wifery expe­ri­ence post reg­is­tra­tion and 3 years work­ing as a remote area nurse with expe­ri­ence work­ing in a Women Health pro­gram preferred.
  • Demon­strat­ed knowl­edge of the prin­ci­ples of Pri­ma­ry Health Care, and pro­gram deliv­ery in a Pri­ma­ry Health Care setting.
  • Demon­strat­ed under­stand­ing and knowl­edge of social deter­mi­nants of health issues affect­ing Abo­rig­i­nal people.
  • Demon­strat­ed abil­i­ty to inter­act effec­tive­ly with peo­ple from a diverse cul­ture, where Eng­lish is not their first language.
  • Demon­strat­ed abil­i­ty and expe­ri­ence work­ing autonomous­ly and col­lab­o­ra­tive­ly with­in a mul­ti­dis­ci­pli­nary team.
  • Demon­strat­ed abil­i­ty to work inde­pen­dent­ly with expe­ri­ence in par­tic­i­pat­ing in emer­gency after hours call services.
  • Demon­strat­ed excel­lent and effec­tive com­mu­ni­ca­tion and com­put­er skills.
  • Demon­strat­ed com­mit­ment and under­stand­ing of the Con­tin­u­ous Qual­i­ty Improve­ment process­es, infec­tion con­trol and WHS principles.
  • Demon­strat­ed com­mit­ment to pro­fes­sion­al devel­op­ment and best practice.
  • Capac­i­ty to reside in remote communities.
  • Well Women’s Screen­ing Course.
  • Remote Emer­gency Care cer­tifi­cate (REC).
  • Advanced Life Sup­port cer­tifi­cate (ALS).
  • Cur­rent man­u­al driver’s license.

Desir­able

  • Knowl­edge of Yol­ngu cul­ture and Yol­ngu lan­guage skills.
  • Com­plet­ed or work­ing towards rel­e­vant post­grad­u­ate qualifications.
  • Cur­rent NT recog­nised Immu­ni­sa­tion provider cer­ti­fi­ca­tion (AGV or SA DoH).
  • Cur­rent Mid­wifery Emer­gency cer­tifi­cate (MEC) (for Non-Midwives).
  • Mid­wifery upskilling (MIDUS) (for Mid­wives only).
  • Cur­rent Pae­di­atric Emer­gency Care cer­tifi­cate (PEC).
  • Cur­rent Phar­ma­cother­a­peu­tics certificate.
  • Use of Communicare.
  • Abil­i­ty to oper­ate a 4×4 wheel dri­ve vehicle.
