Spinifex People
Tjuntjuntjara is a small, remote Aboriginal community located on the Spinifex Lands in the Western Desert region of Western Australia. The Tjuntjuntjara Clinic services a population of around 150 people. The community’s remoteness is one of its greatest strengths: it is a relatively healthy community with a strong cultural base and good development prospects. The health service trades as Spinifex Health Service (SHS).
Spinifex Health Service is an Aboriginal Controlled Community Health Organisation governed by the Paupiyala Tjarutja Aboriginal Corporation (PTAC) Board and the Health Sub-committee. Spinifex Health Service is also responsible for the delivery of aged care & disability services, operating in conjunction with its primary care and preventative health programs.
Primary Purpose
This position has responsibility for the provision of health care in the areas of Primary Health, Sexual Health, Chronic Disease, Aged Care and Mental Health in the community, as well as providing emergency care and RAN leave relief as required. Clinic staff are supported by Aboriginal Health Practitioners and trainee Aboriginal Health Workers. The Spinifex Health Service Medical Director provides GP services both within community and off-site. When the GP is not in residence the RAN’S are the senior clinicians in community and work as a collaborative team together with Aboriginal Health Practitioners.
Responsibilities include:
- Provision of health checks, developmental and follow up of GP management plans and TCA
- Providing education to the community about health promotion and disease prevention, and to clients to assist them in understanding and managing their health conditions and treatment requirements
- Working closely with Aged Care Services that are delivered in the community
- Working closely with allied health and other clinicians to provide contemporary best practice care
- Performing clinical duties in all areas of the health service as directed by the Medical Director or Health Services Manager, which you are appropriately qualified and competent to perform which may include portfolio responsibilities in the areas of general clinic management, emergency care and stabilisation including managing medical evacuations, child and family health, aged care, antenatal, sexual health, mental health, chronic disease, health screening and community programs
- Providing palliative care where required
- Work an on-call roster
Criteria
Essential
- Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
- A minimum of three years full-time broad-based nursing experience, including A&E experience
- Demonstrated remote Aboriginal nursing experience
- Completion of REC, BLS/ALS, pharmacotherapy courses
- Demonstrated understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal health, the principles of Primary Health Care and relevant legislation governing work practice
- Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, evidence-based practice, research, education and professional development
- Familiarity with the CARPA Manual and the Women’s Business Manual
- A comprehensive understanding of best practice for the management and treatment of chronic diseases in Aboriginal Communities
- Recognised current Immunisation course certificate/training
- Some experience in social and emotional wellbeing, mental health or alcohol and drug counselling
- National police check
- West Australian Working with Children Check
- Manual current drivers’ licence
- Government mandatory COVID-19 Vaccination applies
Cross Cultural:
- A genuine interest in working cooperatively with traditionally oriented Aboriginal people
- Strong cross-cultural communication skills
- Experience working in a remote area Aboriginal community
