The Child Health Nurse is accountable to the Clinical Lead – Newman and is accountable to the Director of Clinical Services and is primarily responsible for providing a family-centred, comprehensive child health service to clients of the Newman Clinic serviced by Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Services (PAMS).

About the Opportunity

The Child Health Nurse is account­able to the Clin­i­cal Lead – New­man and is account­able to the Direc­tor of Clin­i­cal Ser­vices and is pri­mar­i­ly respon­si­ble for pro­vid­ing a fam­i­ly-cen­tred, com­pre­hen­sive child health ser­vice to clients of the New­man Clin­ic ser­viced by Pun­tukur­nu Abo­rig­i­nal Med­ical Ser­vices (PAMS).

About You

To be con­sid­ered for this posi­tion, you must have:

Cur­rent Reg­is­tra­tion as a Reg­is­tered Nurse with Aus­tralian Heath Prac­ti­tion­er Health Agency;

  • Rel­e­vant ter­tiary qual­i­fi­ca­tion in Child and Fam­i­ly Health nurs­ing and/​or min­i­mum of two years pre­vi­ous expe­ri­ence work­ing in a Child, Fam­i­ly and School Health Nurse or sim­i­lar role;
  • Com­ple­tion of the SA Under­stand­ing Vac­cines and Nation­al Immu­ni­sa­tion Pro­gram course and annu­al updates since com­ple­tion or be will­ing to com­plete with­in 6 weeks of com­mence­ment in the role. Pre­vi­ous expe­ri­ence work­ing in a mul­ti-dis­ci­pli­nary pri­ma­ry health care team with a demon­strat­ed abil­i­ty and desire to effec­tive­ly engage with Abo­rig­i­nal chil­dren and their families
  • Sound under­stand­ing of the prin­ci­ples of pri­ma­ry health care and the mod­el of Abo­rig­i­nal Com­mu­ni­ty Con­trolled Health Service;
  • Knowl­edge and expe­ri­ence in the pro­vi­sion of child health programs.
  • Expe­ri­ence in elec­tron­ic patient infor­ma­tion man­age­ment systems

DESIR­ABLE:

  • The per­son is of Abo­rig­i­nal and/​or Tor­res Strait Islander decent and is acknowl­edged as such by their community.
  • Post Grad­u­ate qual­i­fi­ca­tions in Child Health.
  • Cur­rent reg­is­tra­tion with the Aus­tralian Health Prac­ti­tion­er Reg­u­la­tion Agency as a Reg­is­tered Midwife
  • An advanced knowl­edge of Com­mu­ni­care includ­ing the abil­i­ty to pro­duce reports and recall lists

The posi­tion involves work­ing with a mul­ti­cul­tur­al organ­i­sa­tion where the major­i­ty of staff, clients and stake­hold­ers iden­ti­fy as Abo­rig­i­nal or Tor­res Strait Islander. Can­di­dates must be able to demon­strate an under­stand­ing of the issues affect­ing Abo­rig­i­nal and Tor­res Strait Islander peo­ple and their abil­i­ty to com­mu­ni­cate sen­si­tive­ly and effec­tive­ly with Abo­rig­i­nal and Tor­res Strait Islander people.

This posi­tion offers the oppor­tu­ni­ty to work close­ly with remote Abo­rig­i­nal com­mu­ni­ties and make a dras­tic impact to the health and well-being out­comes of these communities.

PAMS oper­ates five sites, four of which are remote and man­aged by a team of clin­i­cians and a range of ancil­lary work­ers. Although the suc­cess­ful can­di­dates will have a sub­stan­tive loca­tion in Jiga­long they must be pre­pared from time to time to work across any one of these sites should they be required.

PAMS oper­ates in some of the most remote parts of Aus­tralia and staff are required to be pro­fi­cient at dri­ving a 4WD vehi­cle and will­ing to fly in light aircraft.

With an admin­is­tra­tive hub based in New­man, in the Pil­bara region of West­ern Aus­tralia, The Pun­tukur­nu Abo­rig­i­nal Med­ical Ser­vice (PAMS) pro­vides holis­tic pri­ma­ry health care to the indi­vid­u­als and fam­i­lies with­in the remote com­mu­ni­ties of Jiga­long, Parn­ngurr, Pun­mu and Kunawarritji.

PAMS aims to improve the stan­dard of health of the Mar­tu peo­ple and all Abo­rig­i­nal peo­ple liv­ing in the East Pil­bara region of West­ern Aus­tralia through the pro­vi­sion of com­mu­ni­ty based, com­pre­hen­sive pri­ma­ry health care ser­vices. We exist to pro­mote the health and well-being of indi­vid­ual com­mu­ni­ty mem­bers and to relieve sick­ness and the suf­fer­ing of the indige­nous com­mu­ni­ty as a whole. We are pas­sion­ate about pro­vid­ing the high­est stan­dard of patient care whilst incor­po­rat­ing a holis­tic approach toward diag­no­sis and man­age­ment of illness.
