Katherine West Health Board (KWHB) is currently looking for a Child Health Program Coordinator this position will be well suited to someone who is a Registered nurse or Aboriginal health practitioner with extensive experience working with children in remote health environments. With an understanding of Aboriginal cultural values, and commitment to the advancement and self-determination of Aboriginal communities.

Estab­lished in 1998, Kather­ine West Health Board is an Abo­rig­i­nal Com­mu­ni­ty Con­trolled Health Organ­i­sa­tion that pro­vides a range of clin­i­cal, pre­ven­ta­tive and pub­lic health ser­vices to clients in the Kather­ine West Region of the North­ern Ter­ri­to­ry. With four major health care cen­tres and a range of satel­lite cen­tres, KWHB ser­vices an area over two times the size of Tas­ma­nia (162,000km²), help­ing to improve the health and well­be­ing of some of the most remote com­mu­ni­ties in Australia. 

Posi­tion Description

About the Opportunity

The focus of the Child Health Pro­gram is to con­duct and increase health assess­ments to address devel­op­men­tal, phys­i­cal and emo­tion­al well­be­ing of chil­dren and young peo­ple in the KWHB region. This includes strength­en­ing exist­ing child health sur­veil­lance, pro­vid­ing tar­get­ed health checks that address phys­i­cal, emo­tion­al devel­op­ment, ensur­ing time­ly deliv­ery of immu­ni­sa­tions and address­ing emerg­ing health issues in young peo­ple – such as men­tal health, sub­stance use and pro­tec­tive behaviours.

Respon­si­bil­i­ties will include (but not lim­it­ed to):

  • Pro­vide qual­i­ty pri­ma­ry health care to chil­dren, young peo­ple and their fam­i­lies, with a focus on dri­ving strong health out­comes for chil­dren and young peo­ple aged 5 – 17 years of age.
  • Pro­mote, sup­port, and empow­er clients and fam­i­lies using cul­tur­al­ly secure prac­tice and cul­tur­al­ly appro­pri­ate resources to opti­mise child health outcomes.
  • Col­lab­o­rate close­ly with the Strong Begin­nings for Strong Fam­i­lies nurs­es to smooth­ly tran­si­tion chil­dren aged five and their fam­i­lies from the Strong Begin­nings for Strong Fam­i­lies ser­vice pro­gram to the pro­vi­sion of ongo­ing child health supports.
  • Pro­vide lead­er­ship in child health across mul­ti­dis­ci­pli­nary teams to ensure a high-qual­i­ty holis­tic approach to the deliv­ery of child health care in the region.
  • Par­tic­i­pate in qual­i­ty improve­ment activ­i­ties for the child health pro­gram to ensure the pro­vi­sion of high-qual­i­ty care to chil­dren in the region.
  • Par­tic­i­pate in health pro­mo­tion as out­lined in KWHB health pro­mo­tion strategy.
