Why Marthakal Home­lands Health Ser­vice?
MHHS, sit­u­at­ed on Galiwin’ku (Elcho Island), is a mobile Yol­ngu Med­ical Ser­vice cov­er­ing 15,000 square kilo­me­tres in remote East Arn­hem Land with a pop­u­la­tion around 300. There are 29 home­lands in the Marthakal Home­lands region, for which the med­ical ser­vice is on 24 hours emer­gency call. Being a mobile med­ical ser­vice means that the health team trav­els in small planes and man­u­al four-wheel dri­ve vehi­cles to con­duct clin­ics out on the home­lands. What med­ical equip­ment can­not be packed can’t be tak­en, so com­pact stur­dy anti shock equip­ment is used.

What’s in it for you?

What’s the role? The Reg­is­tered Nurse iden­ti­fies the needs and pro­vide evi­dence-based nurs­ing care to peo­ple of all ages and cul­tur­al groups, includ­ing indi­vid­u­als, fam­i­lies, and com­mu­ni­ties in home­lands in an effec­tive and time­ly man­ner with an expect­ed health outcome

  • The Reg­is­tered Nurse assess­es, plans, imple­ments, and eval­u­ates nurs­ing care in col­lab­o­ra­tion with a mul­ti­dis­ci­pli­nary health care team com­pris­ing On-site and Remote GPs, AHP, AHW trainees, Health Ser­vices Man­ag­er, and oth­er non-clin­i­cal staff, so as to achieve goals and health out­comes for Home­lands Clients.
  • As a Remote Area Nurse (RAN) in MHHS, you will pro­vide high qual­i­ty, evi­denced-based care; edu­ca­tion for assigned health pro­grams port­fo­lio (Chron­ic Dis­ease, Child Health, Women’s Health, Men­tal Health); and par­tic­i­pate in rou­tine ser­vice deliv­ery of vac­ci­na­tions to the homeland’s community.
  • You will men­tor Abo­rig­i­nal Health Prac­ti­tion­er (AHW) trainees, sup­port AHPs and AHW trainees as the pri­ma­ry health car­ers with­in the com­mu­ni­ty, and work to build stronger communities.
  • Using skills and knowl­edge to deliv­er qual­i­ty health care and meet all legal obligations
  • Sup­port­ing and par­tic­i­pat­ing in all ini­tia­tives and change process­es that aim to improve ser­vice delivery
  • Trav­el by man­u­al 4WD/​light air­craft required.

Is the role right for you?

  • A rel­e­vant ter­tiary qual­i­fi­ca­tion degree and cur­rent reg­is­tra­tion with AHPRA.
  • Cur­rent REC, MEC, BLS, ALS, Immu­niza­tion, Phar­ma­cother­a­peu­tics cer­ti­fi­ca­tions or will­ing­ness to obtain the cer­ti­fi­ca­tions with­in 6 months of employment.
  • Ide­al­ly expe­ri­ence work­ing and liv­ing in a remote Indige­nous com­mu­ni­ty, which is an alco­hol-free environment
  • Demon­strat­ed abil­i­ty to engage effec­tive­ly and sen­si­tive­ly with Indige­nous peo­ple for whom Eng­lish is not their first language
  • Demon­strat­ed abil­i­ty and expe­ri­ence to work autonomous­ly and col­lab­o­ra­tive­ly with­in a mul­ti­dis­ci­pli­nary team in a small, remote Abo­rig­i­nal Con­trolled Health Ser­vice deliv­er­ing pri­ma­ry and den­tal health care
  • Demon­strat­ed under­stand­ing and knowl­edge of social deter­mi­nants of health issues affect­ing Abo­rig­i­nal people
  • Cur­rent man­u­al driver’s licence, cur­rent Work­ing with Chil­dren clear­ance (OCHRE Card) and cur­rent crim­i­nal his­to­ry check.
  • Demon­strat­ed abil­i­ty to work autonomous­ly, demon­strat­ing effi­cient time man­age­ment skills.
