About the Organisation

Kim­ber­ley Abo­rig­i­nal Med­ical Ser­vices LTD (KAMS) is a well-estab­lished region­al Abo­rig­i­nal com­mu­ni­ty con­trolled health ser­vice, found­ed in 1986, which pro­vides cen­tralised advo­ca­cy and resource sup­port for 6 inde­pen­dent mem­ber ser­vices, as well as pro­vid­ing direct clin­i­cal ser­vices in a fur­ther 6 remote Abo­rig­i­nal com­mu­ni­ties across the region.

KAMS has suc­cess­ful­ly deliv­ered high-qual­i­ty, acces­si­ble com­pre­hen­sive pri­ma­ry health care ser­vices over its 22 years of oper­a­tion and has pro­vid­ed inno­va­tion and nation­al lead­er­ship in areas such as health infor­ma­tion man­age­ment and evi­dence based best prac­tice in pri­ma­ry health care.

About the Opportunity

KAMS now has an oppor­tu­ni­ty for a 2 x Abo­rig­i­nal Health Work­er to join their friend­ly, mul­ti­dis­ci­pli­nary team in Bal­go and Billilu­na WA, on a full-time basis. Report­ing to the Health Cen­tre Man­ag­er, you will be required to pro­vide pri­ma­ry health care, includ­ing clin­i­cal care to clients in the health cen­tre and is respon­si­ble for pro­vid­ing sup­port to doc­tors, nurs­es and oth­er allied health staff as well as the com­mu­ni­ty in order to main­tain and pro­mote health care

Some of your key respon­si­bil­i­ties will include:

  • Screen patients and treat accord­ing to Kim­ber­ley and /​or CARPA pro­to­cols or refer the client to a more senior health work­er, nurse or doctor.
  • Par­tic­i­pate in screen­ing and treat­ing patients e.g. adult health checks and team care arrange­ments accord­ing to Kim­ber­ley and /​or CARPA protocol 
  • Pro­vide cul­tur­al­ly appro­pri­ate health care to meet the needs of the community
  • Par­tic­i­pate in rel­e­vant local com­mu­ni­ty projects and groups that aim to increase gen­er­al aware­ness of health relat­ed issues impact­ing on the community.
  • Assist doc­tors, nurs­es and oth­er health pro­fes­sion­als with com­mu­ni­ca­tion, treat­ment and any advice rel­e­vant to a clients treatment

The ide­al can­di­date will be a Abo­rig­i­nal Health Work­er — Cer­tifi­cate IV, who is reg­is­tered or is eli­gi­ble for reg­is­tra­tion with, AHPRA. You’ll have the demon­strat­ed abil­i­ty to sup­port all health cen­tre and pro­gram activ­i­ties by com­plet­ing clin­i­cal care items required pri­or to see­ing the doc­tor. These includes rou­tine inves­ti­ga­tion e.g. weight, BP, BMI, foot checks, urine col­lec­tion, tak­ing bloods and also pro­vid­ing edu­ca­tion on man­ag­ing risk factors.

Ide­al­ly, you would have lived and/​or worked as a Abo­rig­i­nal Health Work­er in a remote area pre­vi­ous­ly, with a com­mit­ment to the prin­ci­pals of an Abo­rig­i­nal com­mu­ni­ty con­trolled health ser­vice and the abil­i­ty to work both autonomous­ly and as part of a mul­ti­dis­ci­pli­nary team. A high lev­el of integri­ty and a ded­i­ca­tion to main­tain­ing patient con­fi­den­tial­i­ty will ensure you flour­ish in this position.

Expe­ri­ence with clin­i­cal data­base sys­tems and pro­fi­cien­cy with Microsoft Word and Excel will be high­ly regard­ed. Due to the nature of this role, a cur­rent man­u­al driver’s licence with the capac­i­ty to dri­ve a 4WD is required.

  • Attrac­tive base salary: $81,599 – $83,537 p.a.
  • Dis­trict allowance: $4,092 p.a.
  • Iso­la­tion leave:
  • 2 weeks every 10 weeks if liv­ing in com­mu­ni­ty, or FIFO option: 6 weeks on / 3 weeks off with a $2,000 iso­la­tion air­fare subsidy
  • Annu­al air­fare sub­sidy: Up to $1,881 (after 12 months of service)
  • 5 weeks annu­al leave (pro rata)
  • Addi­tion­al ben­e­fits: Accom­mo­da­tion, trav­el sup­port, and salary pack­ag­ing available
