Home to approximately 2000 Yarnangu (Ngaanyatjarra people) across 11 unique communities, our council is dedicated to preserving and celebrating our rich heritage spanning over 10,000 years and 250,000 square kilometres.
Established in 1981, the Ngaanyatjarra Council Group (NCG) represents the interests of the Ngaanyatjarra People across the 11 communities in the Central Desert region of Western Australia. Employing in excess of 450 people, NCG provides a wide range of services, including health, utilities, construction, employment, community development, shops, roadhouses, art centres and land services. It is one of the largest and most successful Indigenous organisations in the country.
Our Vision:
Representing the aspirations and interests of our diverse communities, we are dedicated to keeping Yarnangu strong on Country.
The Opportunity:
Ngaanyatjarra Health Service (NHS) is offering a unique and rewarding opportunity for a committed Medical Officer to join our dedicated team delivering high-quality, culturally safe primary health care across the Ngaanyatjarra Lands. In this vital role, you will provide frontline clinical services at community health centres and the regional aged care facility, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team that includes remote area nurses, Aboriginal Health Practitioners, visiting specialists, and allied health professionals.
You will contribute to a holistic, community-informed model of care that addresses a range of health priorities including chronic disease management, mental health, child and maternal health, and aged care. Your responsibilities will include clinical consultations, care planning, contributing to Medicare billing through health checks and care arrangements, and maintaining comprehensive clinical records using the Communicare system.
As a Medical Officer, you’ll also participate in continuous quality improvement processes and contribute to the development of evidence-based services through effective use of health data. You’ll be supported to maintain culturally appropriate clinical practices, develop strong connections with community members, and contribute to the training and supervision of medical students or registrars as needed.
This position is ideal for a doctor who thrives in remote environments, values meaningful community engagement, and is committed to delivering equitable, person-centred care. It’s a chance to not only advance your professional skills but to make a lasting difference in the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people in some of the most culturally rich and geographically remote regions of Australia.
About You:
You are a fully registered medical practitioner with AHPRA and bring experience in primary health care, ideally with a strong understanding of the unique needs of remote Indigenous communities. You are a clear communicator, collaborative team member, and are deeply committed to culturally safe, person-centered care. Your ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams helps you contribute meaningfully to improved health outcomes for Aboriginal people on the Ngaanyatjarra Lands.
Holding Fellowship with either ACRRM or RACGP is highly desirable, and advanced skills in areas such as obstetrics, emergency medicine, or other rural generalist disciplines would be a significant advantage. You’re comfortable using digital health systems (with Communicare experience a plus), and you actively support the development of colleagues and team members.
You hold a current C‑class driver’s license and have (or are eligible to obtain) a WA Working with Children Check and National Police Clearance. You’re also willing and able to travel across remote regions by 4WD or light aircraft as part of your commitment to equitable healthcare access.
