Katherine West Health Board (KWHB) is currently looking for a Mental Health Registered Nurse. This position requires at least five years’ post graduate experience in Mental Health with demonstrated skills and competencies. With an understanding of Aboriginal cultural values, and commitment to the advancement and self-determination of Aboriginal communities.

Estab­lished in 1998, Kather­ine West Health Board is an Abo­rig­i­nal Com­mu­ni­ty Con­trolled Health Organ­i­sa­tion that pro­vides a range of clin­i­cal, pre­ven­ta­tive and pub­lic health ser­vices to clients in the Kather­ine West Region of the North­ern Ter­ri­to­ry. With four major health care cen­tres and a range of satel­lite cen­tres, KWHB ser­vices an area over two times the size of Tas­ma­nia (162,000km²), help­ing to improve the health and well­be­ing of some of the most remote com­mu­ni­ties in Australia. 

Posi­tion Description

About the Opportunity

The Men­tal Health Reg­is­tered Nurse pro­vides spe­cialised sup­port to clients and their fam­i­lies requir­ing men­tal health care and to the remote based staff pro­vid­ing care. The posi­tion pro­motes excel­lence in clin­i­cal stan­dards and qual­i­ty of care and works close­ly with the broad­er Pri­ma­ry Health Care (PHC) team.

Respon­si­bil­i­ties will include (but not lim­it­ed to):

  • Pro­vide cul­tur­al­ly safe Men­tal Health care for peo­ple of all ages in the Kather­ine West region through direct con­tact with clients and fam­i­lies or by pro­vid­ing advice to oth­er mem­bers of the PHC team.
  • Demon­strate a high stan­dard of pro­fes­sion­al prac­tice and clin­i­cal knowl­edge that incor­po­rates cur­rent best prac­tice, edu­ca­tion, and research.
  • Under­take thor­ough men­tal health assess­ments, risk assess­ment, emer­gency sup­port, treat­ment, and case man­age­ment ser­vices, and a range of ther­a­peu­tic inter­ven­tions to sup­port peo­ple and their car­ers affect­ed by men­tal health conditions.
  • Active­ly pro­mote men­tal health aware­ness and engage in pri­ma­ry pre­ven­tion activ­i­ties (e.g., health pro­mo­tion) in part­ner­ship with rel­e­vant agen­cies, com­mu­ni­ty organ­i­sa­tions, key stake­hold­ers, con­sumers, and carers.
  • Main­tain accu­rate and up to date clin­i­cal records in accor­dance with estab­lished infor­ma­tion sys­tems and protocols.
