The town of Tennant Creek is known as the Territory’s heart of gold, a reference to the friendliness of its people and the area’s rich gold mining history. It is roughly 500km north of Alice Springs and is located in between many of the Territory’s best-known sights meaning there is plenty to explore and enjoy in the history-rich region. The town is at the intersection of two main highways, the Stuart and Barkly Highways, and is easily accessed via road, rail, bus and air.
Tennant Creek is home to 3,080 people and has a real outback-town flavour, centred around one main street lined with trees and filled with locally owned stores. The area boasts country culture meets friendly relaxed living and is a young town with half of the population under 35 years of age.
Throughout the year there are many events in the region including the Desert Harmony festival, the Tennant Creek show, horse racing and rodeos, speedway, sports, art events and live music. Barkly Regional Arts also presents an exciting suite of events from trivia nights, art exhibitions and comedy shows.
