Katherine West Health Board (KWHB) is currently looking for a Senior Maternal and Women's Health Advisor. This position is well suited to someone who is a Registered Midwife and/or Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Authority (AHPRA) With a minimum of three years’ experience in midwifery and maternal health. Who has an understanding of Aboriginal cultural values, and commitment to the advancement and self-determination of Aboriginal communities.

Estab­lished in 1998, Kather­ine West Health Board is an Abo­rig­i­nal Com­mu­ni­ty Con­trolled Health Organ­i­sa­tion that pro­vides a range of clin­i­cal, pre­ven­ta­tive and pub­lic health ser­vices to clients in the Kather­ine West Region of the North­ern Ter­ri­to­ry. With four major health care cen­tres and a range of satel­lite cen­tres, KWHB ser­vices an area over two times the size of Tas­ma­nia (162,000km²), help­ing to improve the health and well­be­ing of some of the most remote com­mu­ni­ties in Australia.

About the Opportunity

The Senior Mater­nal and Women’s Health Advi­sor will over­see the Mater­nal and Women’s Health pro­gram at KWHB, ensur­ing the deliv­ery of high-qual­i­ty, evi­dence-based ante­na­tal, post­na­tal, and women’s health ser­vices. This posi­tion pro­vides clin­i­cal lead­er­ship, strate­gic direc­tion, and pro­gram coor­di­na­tion for the mater­nal and women’s health team while work­ing close­ly with KWHB clin­ics, exter­nal spe­cial­ists, and part­ner organ­i­sa­tions to enhance ser­vice delivery. 

The role is based in Dar­win or Kather­ine (0.6 FTE) with reg­u­lar trav­el to KWHB com­mu­ni­ties to sup­port pro­gram imple­men­ta­tion, staff train­ing, and qual­i­ty improve­ment activities.

Respon­si­bil­i­ties will include (but not lim­it­ed to):

  • Pro­vide clin­i­cal over­sight for mater­nal and women’s health ser­vices across KWHB, ensur­ing care aligns with evi­dence-based best practices.
  • Ensure effec­tive care coor­di­na­tion for women with com­plex med­ical or social care needs, work­ing col­lab­o­ra­tive­ly with pri­ma­ry health care teams, hos­pi­tals, and spe­cial­ist services
  • Lead the devel­op­ment, imple­men­ta­tion, and con­tin­u­ous improve­ment of strate­gic pri­or­i­ties for mater­nal and women’s health across KWHB.
  • Ensure all mater­nal health pro­grams are cul­tur­al­ly safe, com­mu­ni­ty-dri­ven, and aligned with KWHB’s com­mit­ment to Abo­rig­i­nal self-deter­mi­na­tion in health care.
  • Sup­port train­ing, men­tor­ing, and pro­fes­sion­al devel­op­ment for mid­wives, nurs­es, and Abo­rig­i­nal Health Prac­ti­tion­ers in mater­nal and women’s health.
  • Pro­mote a mul­ti-dis­ci­pli­nary approach to deci­sion-mak­ing and patient care.
  • Liaise with region­al hos­pi­tals, Mater­ni­ty Group Prac­tice, and exter­nal agen­cies to ensure con­ti­nu­ity of care for preg­nant women and new mothers.
  • Engage with Abo­rig­i­nal com­mu­ni­ties, tra­di­tion­al own­ers, and local organ­i­sa­tions to ensure ser­vices remain respon­sive to com­mu­ni­ty needs.
  • Trav­el to KWHB com­mu­ni­ties on a reg­u­lar basis to sup­port pro­gram imple­men­ta­tion, staff train­ing, and com­mu­ni­ty engagement.

The suc­cess­ful can­di­date will enjoy an attrac­tive remu­ner­a­tion of HCC1 $132,266 — NP $145,402 (nego­ti­at­ed based on skills, qual­i­fi­ca­tions and expe­ri­ence) PLUS super and a range of ben­e­fits, which include:
