The Sexual Health Nurse directly reports to the Clinical Lead Newman and is accountable to the Director of Clinical Services and is Responsible for increasing the testing of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and Blood Borne Viruses (BBVs) to the at risk group across the Martu Aboriginal communities of Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu and Kunawarritji.

About the Opportunity

This is in response to a Syphilis out­break and endem­ic lev­els of oth­er STIs and will be achieved through sup­port­ing the exist­ing com­pre­hen­sive pri­ma­ry health care approach and improved processes.

About You

To be con­sid­ered for this posi­tion, can­di­dates must be able to clear­ly demon­strate their abil­i­ty to meet the below Essen­tial Selec­tion Criteria:

  • Demon­strat­ed abil­i­ty to com­mu­ni­cate effec­tive­ly and sen­si­tive­ly with Abo­rig­i­nal and Tor­res Strait Islander peoples.
  • Cur­rent reg­is­tra­tion with AHPRA as a Reg­is­tered Nurse.
  • Demon­strat­ed skills and expe­ri­ence in sex­u­al health or pri­ma­ry health care nursing.
  • Expe­ri­ence in the plan­ning, pro­vi­sion, man­age­ment and eval­u­a­tion of sex­u­al health ser­vices with­in an Indige­nous pri­ma­ry health care setting.
  • Excel­lent knowl­edge and under­stand­ing of issues affect­ing the health and well­be­ing of Abo­rig­i­nal and/​or Tor­res Strait Islander people.
  • Demon­strat­ed abil­i­ty to com­mu­ni­cate effec­tive­ly and sen­si­tive­ly with Abo­rig­i­nal people.
  • Abil­i­ty to work inde­pen­dent­ly and/​or col­lab­o­ra­tive­ly as part of a team in a remote setting.
  • High­ly devel­oped and demon­strat­ed com­mu­ni­ca­tion (ver­bal and in writ­ing) skills, with a par­tic­u­lar empha­sis on devel­op­ing effec­tive work­ing rela­tion­ships with a vari­ety of inter­est groups, indi­vid­u­als and organisations.
  • Abil­i­ty to con­duct train­ing and edu­ca­tion ses­sions to a range of audi­ences includ­ing young peo­ple, health pro­fes­sion­als, and com­mu­ni­ty members.
  • An abil­i­ty to work, reside and trav­el inde­pen­dent­ly in a remote region.
  • Demon­strat­ed organ­i­sa­tion­al and time man­age­ment skills along with an abil­i­ty to adapt to chang­ing needs.
  • High lev­el of integri­ty in main­tain­ing both organ­i­sa­tion­al and client confidentiality. 

In addi­tion to the above, the desir­able cri­te­ria are:

  • The per­son iden­ti­fies as Abo­rig­i­nal and/​or Tor­res Strait Islander and is acknowl­edged as such by their community.
  • Post-grad­u­ate qual­i­fi­ca­tions in sex­u­al health.
  • Expe­ri­ence in using elec­tron­ic patient infor­ma­tion data­base sys­tems (prefer­ably Com­mu­ni­care) with­in the pri­ma­ry health care setting.

Pol­i­cy

This posi­tion offers the oppor­tu­ni­ty to work close­ly with remote Abo­rig­i­nal com­mu­ni­ties and make a dras­tic impact to the health and well-being out­comes of these communities.

PAMS oper­ates five sites, sup­port­ed by a range of clin­i­cians, com­mu­ni­ty health work­ers and oth­er ancil­lary work­ers. Although the suc­cess­ful can­di­dates will have a sub­stan­tive loca­tion (New­man) they must be pre­pared from time to time to work across any one of these sites should they be required.

PAMS oper­ates in some of the most remote parts of Aus­tralia and staff are required to be pro­fi­cient at dri­ving a 4WD vehi­cle and will­ing to fly in light aircraft.
